In September of 2012, teachers and allies from the Chicago Teachers Union spilled into the windy city's streets. In an historic move, they voted to go on strike due to budget cuts impacting classrooms around Chicago. The strike lasted one week. The night the strike ended, some advocates in some of the poorest neighborhoods told reporters negotiations between City Hall and the CTU were provisionally successful and that the same issues were occurring in public schools nationwide. Shortly after they boarded a DC bound bus to ask President Obama to do more than what the city offered in negotiations. Since then, Mayor Emanuel closed 53 schools around the city.
